Our Review Of The Holland American Maasdam in Montreal

About River or Ocean Cruises

My first ship inspection was a new exciting adventure for me. I travelled by plane to Montreal to board the Holland American Maasdam. As a member of the Cruise Line International this gave me access to board. We first passed through security as a group to board just as regular passengers would do.

We started on the top deck and worked our way down to the lower decks. Our guide showed us several of the different staterooms & suites on each of the floors as well as the public areas.

Because this is a smaller ship compared to larger ones you'll find the pools to be smaller, but there are 2 onboard. If you love listening to the piano you'll find a piano bar, and for those who like to partake in gambling there is also a casino onboard.

Ship Facts

The Massdam got it's name from the Maas River in the Netherlands. This ship is the 5th one in the Holland America Line which was almost sold this year, but at the last minute it was decided to keep it. The crew on the ship work very hard to keep everything clean for the guests.

Guest capacity: 1, 258

Gross Tonnage: 62,735 grt.

Length: 780 feet

Maximum speed: 22.5 knots

Dining Options

There are 6 dining options onboard the Maasdam. The Pinnacle Grill, Evening at La Cirque, Canaletto, the main dining room, Lido Market & Dive-IN. We had a set menu for us as travel agents. Started with a drink, appetizer, main course and desert with coffee. I choose the corn soup and scallops for my meal. Both very delicious. If your a large eater you may find this not enough but keep in mind your have access to lots of food all the time. Trust me on cruise ships you will not starve.

Pro Tip: Always check the ships deck plans. We were lucky to see different categories of rooms so when we as travel agents say this room is fully obstructed view were not kidding. You'll either see a metal wall or possibly lifeboats. Partial views are with anywhere from 70% blocked with a partial ocean view to less.

Ship Categories

The suites on board are definitely more spacious and give plenty of ample comforts. Keep in mind when you are cruising you probably will spend little time in your room. Most of your time will be spent exploring the ship and of course the fabulous ports than you will be visiting.

    Our Thoughts

Some areas on this ship will be different than the newer models. I found most of the rooms décor to be the same. This ship in particular seemed to have small rooms compared to what other agents were describing on other ships.
